With Materialism, Everyone Loses

Posted: August 1, 2010 in Articles

The great French mathematician Blaise Pascal said: “It’s not good to be too free. It’s not good to have everything one wants. Unfortunately, nowadays many teenagers are obsessed with materialism. Anyone can see it clearly; in fact, it is almost impossible to find a person who does not want to have the latest gadget or wardrobe!
And the bad thing is that each day, their number increases by the thousands worldwide. So the question is: Why are we so attracted to such things? What are the reasons behind it?
Peer pressure, environmental and moral factors are but some of the reasons why today we are so easily lured by such petty things. For instance, we want to have the latest laptop brand, although we know that sooner or later, it will deteriorate, just simply because our friends have it and we don’t!
But of course, at the end of the day, knowing that this is a rapidly spreading pandemic, wouldn’t it be proper that we take steps to eradicate, or at the least, to mitigate it, right?
The solution might lie in three things: First, our parents teach and show our younger siblings proper values at an early age; second, by choosing good friends; and lastly, by using our intelligence and willpower to contemplate and hold ourselves from falling into such a pitiful state.
If we don’t want to be losers in the end, we should start tackling this problem right now, starting with ourselves, before it’s too late for all of us!
